Gavin Ferris blew away the audience at Sofa Sessions #4 (2011) with his intricate fingerstyle guitar compositions – so I brought him back to play at #7 – Belfast Music Week special (2012), to give him the opportunity to share his unique talents in the prestigious Ulster Hall. Once again he wowed with his dexterous playing. And some banter about his granny.
In 2007, inspired by guitar players such as Antoine Dufour, Tommy Emmanuel, Thomas Leeb and more famously Andy McKee, Gavin adopted a percussive style of playing incorporating rock, metal, flamenco, jazz and blues, while still trying to hold on to his traditional roots. This unusual blend of musical styles has culminated in a unique and exciting sound that Gavin is fast becoming known for.
Gavin has played in many high-profile music venues such as the Ulster Hall, the Black Box, the Queen’s Hall (Newtonards) and has performed alongside guitar legends such as duo Frank Vignola and Vinny Raniolo, Preston Reed and Chris Woods Groove. He has played in numerous festivals, including Feile an Phobail (Belfast), Maiden City Festival (Derry) and Belfast Guitar Festival, and holds the record for being the only person in the history of the Ards International Guitar Festival to be invited back three years in a row.
His one of-a-kind, signature guitar was developed and designed by Gavin and Catherwood Guitars and was first launched in Oct 2014.
He is currently writing/recording new material for his début instrumental album, has taken part in a TV project for SKY ARTS, is regularly featured on Radio Ulster and is one half of an up-and-coming guitar duo, The Acoustic Collective.
